Construction vehicles are very accessible on construction projects, but they can be very dangerous if not operated properly. Of all importance, safe work practices must be observed before operating the vehicle, during operation, and while exiting the vehicle.
The first and most important thing to do before operation is to inspect the steps, handrails, pedals, and grab irons for any possible deficiency. Also, make sure that the tank is filled with fuel. One last matter to be taken care of is that the workers operating the vehicles must have the appropriate clothing and protective equipment. Once in the vehicle, make sure to have your seat belt on at all times. Do not jump off or exit a running vehicle. Visually scan the area to avoid any obstacles, holes, and overhead utility lines. Before departing from the vehicle, it is of utmost importance to wait for all motions to completely stop. Also, check that all pressure has been relieved from all hydraulic controls. At the end, make sure to remove the key if the vehicle will no longer be used.
If all of these steps are followed, this will keep all employees safe from accidents involving construction vehicles. For more information on how to safely use construction vehicles, contact us at (317) 981-7836 or at info@safe-wayconsulting.com.
